Daily Flickr Photo: Old Solingen Station

Henning Mühlinghaus took this stark photo of the former central railway station in Solingen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The station may be defunct, but the line isn’t: note the concrete ties.

Video: Princeton Junction, New Jersey

Princeton Junction, New Jersey is apparently a good station to watch Amtrak trains blast past at high speed, at least if Google Video submissions are any indication. See also this video clip of an Acela and this video clip of an Acela Regional (pulled by an HHP-8).

Daily Flickr Photo: Montreal River Trestle

The passenger coach window mars this photo somewhat, but Cory Dalus‘s photo of the Algoma Central’s Agawa Canyon train crossing the Montreal River trestle is still a great shot of an unusual structure: a trestle atop a hydroelectric dam.

Rail Customers Fume About Fuel Surcharges

Railroad customers can be a cranky bunch to start with, especially when they feel the railroads are gouging them (for example, when rates are higher if the railroad has a monopoly, but lower if there’s competition). Now customers are complaining about a lack of transparency in fuel surcharges — a fact of life in many […]

CP 3Q Results: Coal Down 25%

Last week, Canadian Pacific reported third-quarter net income of $168 million ($1.06 per share) on revenues of $1.12 billion, down by $42 million compared with 3Q 2005 due to foreign exchange and a one-time charge. Coal revenues were down sharply — 25 per cent — but everything else was up and more than made up […]

Amtrak, CN Reach Deal

Amtrak and CN have worked out a deal that allows Amtrak’s expanded Illinois service to begin today. Details of the agreement, which was announced by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) Friday morning, were not released, but CN stated that its concern had been the impact of greater Amtrak traffic on its freight schedules. Previously: CN Screws […]

Daily Flickr Photo: Passing By

Joe shoots a lot of photos around Hammond, Indiana. Here he catches Amtrak’s Père Marquette, pulled by a GE P42DC, passing a stationary Canadian Pacific train (the first engine a leased unit) at dusk. Nice effect.

Video: Great Northern Garden Railroad

Noodling around the video sharing sites, I stumble across several videos by the anonymous owner of the Great Northern Garden Railroad. I’ve chosen this video as a general introduction, but there are others on the video page, including a cab view and snowplowing. A video of a sound-equipped F3 is also available. Certainly I approve […]

Flickr Railfanning Groups

Railfans are such shutterbugs, so no surprise that photo-sharing site Flickr has a huge number of groups dedicated to rail photography. Here’s an incomplete list of some of the groups I’m aware of: All Aboard! I Love Trains Railroad Bridges Railroads Railway Trains Trains and Trolleys Trains at Night It says something about human nature […]
