VIA News: Snow Train, Preference Points

VIA Rail has added a special “snow train” between Edmonton and Jasper. It will run in addition to the thrice-weekly Canadian, as trains #7 and 8 on Fridays and Sundays, which gives Edmontonians a Jasper-for-the-weekend-by-train option that I would frankly have loved when I was living there. But it’s winter-only, especially because it will use the full-length dome cars that are normally on the Jasper-Prince Rupert Skeena in the summer: it runs from January 12 to April 22, 2007.

Meanwhile, VIA is upping the points requirements for return trips through its frequent-traveller Préférence program: formerly a return trip cost fewer points to redeem than two one-way trips, and that’s out of sync with VIA’s current fare structure. So naturally they’ve raised the return requirements (as opposed to lowering the one-way requirements), as of January 1. Oh, well: reward programs are increasingly miserly all over.
