SP 4449

SP 4449 Southern Pacific 4449, a GS4-class 4-8-4 Northern built in 1941, is one of a handful of locomotives still in occasional excursion service. Retired in 1957, it was spared the torch and was one of the steam engines pulling the American Freedom Train in the 1970s. It currently resides at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon, along with SP&S 700 (previously). Its Oregon excursion last September generated more than a few photos on Flickr. For more on SP 4449, see the Friends of SP 4449 site, the SP 4449 Picture Archive, and the inevitable Wikipedia entry. Photo by patmans.
