Want to work for the railroad? The Associated Press reports that, thanks to industry growth and boomers retiring, the railroads are on a hiring spree. The pay is good — $40,000 in the first year, for a job that doesn’t require anything beyond a high school diploma; more for an engineer with a few years’ experience — but the conditions are lousy: long shifts, on-call schedules, and sometimes dangerous work.
