Autumn Leaves, Slippery Rail

Autumn leaves. (Cue music.) It’s hard to believe, but leaves on tracks pose a serious problem for railroad operations — the oil they exude, combined with water and the pressure from trains passing over them, make for slippery conditions, Joe reports, pointing to a recent Wall Street Journal article. The result? “[T]rains have to travel […]

SP 4449

Southern Pacific 4449, a GS4-class 4-8-4 Northern built in 1941, is one of a handful of locomotives still in occasional excursion service. Retired in 1957, it was spared the torch and was one of the steam engines pulling the American Freedom Train in the 1970s. It currently resides at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland, Oregon, […]

Open Transport Tycoon

Speaking of old games, another game I spent too much time playing when I was younger was Transport Tycoon, a moneymaking game involving multiple forms of transit: trains, buses, planes, ships. I haven’t played it in years, and my current hardware wouldn’t let me play it again even if I could find the disks. (Nor […]

Daily Flickr Photo: Scratchbuilt Locomotive

It occurs to me that I should be posting model railroad photography as well, when I find it. There are two remarkable things about this model: one, it’s scratchbuilt; two, it’s in Proto:87, a set of fine-scale standards even more exacting than HO. Photo by renegourley.

You Can’t Keep a Rail Car in Your Garden, Apparently

Eddie Knorn installed a 17.6-metre diesel multiple unit (DMU) rail car in his yard last month, but he’s been told by his local council that it has to go. The council says it’s a safety hazard, while Knorn argues that it makes the busy, accident-prone road on which he lives safer, because it causes drivers […]

Original Railroad Tycoon Now Free

The original, classic version of Railroad Tycoon that caused me to lose so much sleep back in the early 1990s is now available as a free download from the Sid Meier’s Railroads! site. The 14.2-megabyte download includes the manual and reference card; the ability to run it in DOS is naturally required. GameSHOUT, GameSpot, Voodoo […]

West Bengal Train Bombed

Two bombs exploded on a train near Belakova, West Bengal, killing at least 12 and injuring 50 at last report. Police suspect separatist groups. Unfortunately, this train story from West Bengal is considerably less pleasant than my earlier report.
