UP Train Derails, Spills Chemicals

Union Pacific logo A Union Pacific train derailed this morning near the small town of Christopher, Illinois (near Carbondale), the Associated Press reports (Houston Chronicle, Boston Herald, Google News). The accident spilled an as-yet-unidentified chemical that has caused the evacuation of 70 homes; residents are reporting a number of mild symptoms (burning and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat). Two locomotives and 21 freight cars left the tracks.
