CN Train Derails in Quebec

CN accident watch, part 437: a CN train with more than 120 freight cars derailed in — not near, in — Montmagny, Quebec at 1:30 AM yesterday morning. Four of the 24 rail cars that left the tracks contained sulphuric acid, but nothing was spilled. This is the second accident in three years for Montmagny; […]

Minimal Long-term Impact of Lake Wabamun Spill: Report

Speaking of CN accidents (as I am wont to do), a report commissioned by the railway into the Lake Wabamun accident, which dumped 1.3 million litres of fuel oil into the resort lake west of Edmonton Alberta in August 2005, concludes that the accident will not have any significant long-term effects on the lake’s wildlife […]

CN Derailment Strands Crew Overnight

A CN train derailed early this morning on the CN mainline near Lytton, BC when it hit a rockslide; the crew members were trapped for seven hours on a steep embankment before they could be rescued at dawn. The 105-car train had two locomotives and a single wood products car derail — by any standard, […]

News from Ottawa

I live about an hour outside Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, and lately there have been a couple of local rail-related stories that you might find interesting. West Bengal Train Bombed

Two bombs exploded on a train near Belakova, West Bengal, killing at least 12 and injuring 50 at last report. Police suspect separatist groups. Unfortunately, this train story from West Bengal is considerably less pleasant than my earlier report.

Internal Documents Reveal Extent of CN Accident’s Devastation

Internal documents obtained by Canadian Press depict the severity of a Canadian National derailment that all but wiped out a river’s fish stocks (story at Canada.com, CBC News). On August 5, 2005, a 114-car train derailed along the former BC Rail line near Squamish, British Columbia. Among the nine-car spill was a car containing 53,140 […]
