Amtrak Should Lose Northeast Corridor: Report

The Northeast Corridor — the largely Amtrak-owned stretch of track from Boston to New York to Philadelphia to Washington, DC that also sees heavy use by commuter rail services — is too crucial an asset to be left in Amtrak’s hands. That, at least, is my impression of the conclusions of the Northeast Corridor Action […]

Amtrak Blogs, For and Against

Just came across two blogs about Amtrak. Both are written by passenger rail advocates, neither of whom is happy with the situation at the moment. But while Dan Zukowski’s Amtrak blog takes a pro-Amtrak position (recent posts assail freight railroads for failing to move Amtrak trains in a timely manner), Joseph Vranich’s blog, Replacing Amtrak, […]

Daily Flickr Photo: Amtrak’s Green Goat

I recall that Canadian Pacific bought at least one of the hybrid Green Goat switchers; I wasn’t aware that the locomotive had been sold to Amtrak. Stephen Rees caught the photo in New Westminster, British Columbia, in its new livery.

Amtrak and CN have worked out a deal that allows Amtrak’s expanded Illinois service to begin today. Details of the agreement, which was announced by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) Friday morning, were not released, but CN stated that its concern had been the impact of greater Amtrak traffic on its freight schedules. Previously: CN Screws […]

Amtrak FY06: Ridership, Revenues Up

Speaking of Amtrak, they reported their fiscal year 2006 numbers today. Revenues were $1.37 billion — up $132 million, or 11 per cent, over fiscal 2005; ridership was up 300,000, or one per cent, to 24.3 million. Acela ridership and revenues were up, perennial sick man Sunset Limited was down sharply. By route category: Northeast […]

CN Screws Amtrak, Illinois

Everything was in place for expanded Amtrak service in Illinois, with additional trains running to Carbondale, St. Louis and Quincy. Ridership was rising, state funding was doubled for the expansion, and deals were negotiated with the host freight railroads. Service was to begin next Monday. Then Canadian National, which took over the Illinois Central in […]
