Online Map of Switzerland

Map.search.ch is an online map of Switzerland; it launched last October. Like Google Maps, it uses the XMLHttpRequest object (a.k.a. “Ajax”) to allow you to zoom and scroll dynamically without reloading the page. Impressive stuff. Via Simon Willison, via Slashdot.

Yes, this service is pretty fast. Much faster than Swissgeo in any case. And the link generation procedure is much easier (simply click on “send by email” and copy-paste the displayed link).

But I personnaly find the rendered street maps quite ugly. On Swissgeo, depending on the zoom level, you can render a very nice street map or the official maps (in the appropriate scale) of the Federal Office of Topography, which are by far the most beautiful maps I have ever seen.

Alas, Swissgeo’s service is slow and the rendered maps are too small. But then, Swissgeo’s main service rests in its many GPS applications.

Does anyone know of a site similar to this one that covers Germany?
