Hurricane Katrina: Before and After

(Updated) Susan Kitchens has compiled and sent along an animated image (680-KB animated GIF) that shows the New Orleans area before and after Hurricane Katrina passed through; per her suggestion, I’m hosting it on my server.

See previous entries: Hurricane Katrina; Hurricane Katrina: The Aftermath.

Update, 10:30 PM: Boing Boing reports that Google Maps/Earth should have updated imagery within a few days, and links to images of locales both before and after the hurricane hit.

Update, 11:10 PM: I’ve updated the image above to a newer version submitted by Susan; see her comments below.

Thanks for posting and hosting!!!
I just saw a new satellite image taken a day later with no clouds obstructing N.O. So I’m going to update my image/gif with the new one. I’ll let you know when it’s ready. It may be up to 699k, I looked at the one I told you about, and when I tried to reduce pixel count, it threw away oen or two pixel colors which contain what I think is good, solid information.

That was easier than I thought it’d be… to swap out the 8/31 image with the 8/30 image. The file name is neworleansbeforeafter2.gif (size 680k) and the location is in the same directory where I had the other one (see my email address for reference). This one gives a better view of New Orleans and the Mississippi Coast.

It would be easy to make an rough overlay if we knew — do we know — is the level of floodwaters in NOLA at sea level everywhere in the city? Are any locks or levees keeping the water elevation at some areas different from that at others?
