Campus Orientation Maps
I misspent three years at the University of Alberta; this opinion piece in the student newspaper there, The Gateway, has this to say about the quality of the campus orientation map: “It sucks.”

This made me smile. I worked there for 20 years.
I understand what he is talking about, it is true - unfortunately.
But, keep in mind, when it is -55 outside, a good map is essential. :-)

This is a common problem. At the University of California Santa Barbara campus they have a similar problem, Maps are etched into marble pillars all over campus. The only problem is they are all oriented in the same direction. When you are facing south and the map is etched showing north at the top it is confusing for most people. I suppose it would have been very expensive to etch many different orientations into stone, but if the maps are printed on paper perhaps it’s not asking too much to have them oriented in the direction the user is facing when looking at them.
