Pakistani Earthquake Satellite Imagery

The always excellent Kathryn Cramer points to satellite imagery of the earthquake-stricken areas of Pakistan: one-metre-resolution photos from Space Imaging, an image from NASA’s Earth Observatory showing the quake epicentres and fault line, and a page of images from the International Charter “Space and Major Disasters.”

Have a look at Declan Butler’s story in Nature: http://www.nature.com/news/2005/051017/full/4371072a.html

Quake aid hampered by ban on web shots

Open-access satellite images are revolutionizing responses to disasters. Yet the government of Pakistan has forced aid agencies to remove pictures of earthquake devastation from the Internet.

My little maps project merged with the Citizen’s Foundation’s attempt to get maps Thursday morning. It’s us Butler’s talking about.

Butler discovered that there was a UN ban on hi-rez photos of Pakistan on the Internet out of consideration for Pakistan’s desire to protect its national security interests; very shortly after Butler’s story hit the web, the ban was overturned.

My writeup is here: “>http://www.kathryncramer.com/kathryn_cramer/2005/10/if_the_earthqua.html
