Los Angeles Mapped; Jo Mora
Boing Boing links to Los Angeles Mapped, the online version of an exhibition of historical maps of Los Angeles on display through January 2007 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The maps on display are diverse in both subject matter and style: from a railroad system map to a movie-star map to a paper placemat.
But Xeni is even more enamoured with the “obsessively illustrated genius” of Jo Mora’s hyper-detailed 1942 Map of Los Angeles (at right), which you can view in several versions: small, zoomable, and friggin’ huge (4.6 MB).

First, Jo Mora is one of my favorite map-makers, all of his pictorial maps are fun. At the Huntington Library we have a copy of his California map copyrighted in 1927. I think this is the earliest version. Jo Mora made many versions to try to keep up with the times. On the 1927 version, bootleggers are thumbing their noses at the Revenuers off Monterey. Later versions don’t show that but have other interesting variations.
In any case, the Ira Gershwin gallery in Walt Disney Hall, Los Angeles is quite compact, maybe 300 square feet with glass cases on either side. The maps are well displayed. Some people have been disappointed though because you can’t just walk in and see the exhibit. If you are going to a performance, your ticket will get you into the area. If not, you will have to pay a $10 fee for a self guided walking tour to see the exhibit. So, if anyone plans to do so they should allow time to see the rest of this building. Some people like Frank Geary’s wild and flambouyant architecture, others think it looks like cardboard boxes left out in the rain. The people who were really perturbed were the condo dwellers across the street to the west. As the sun goes down the highly reflective skin of the building acts like a radiantheat source, frying the occupants. They finally had to drape some netting over parts of the building to help mitigate this problem. Oh well, architects cant think of everything can they? You think they should? Be careful the Mickey Mouse Hall fans of this guy will slap a Mel Gibson on you.
