Tele Atlas Introduces Map Feedback

When it comes to mapping data, the flow is usually downhill: from the mapping data providers to the companies providing it to the consumers (GPS, online maps). The problem, of course, is that the map data may be wrong or, thanks to the time it takes to traverse the chain, years out of date. Yesterday, though, Tele Atlas announced something that allows us to talk back to the data: a map feedback form called “Map Insight” where we can submit corrections. Which makes the relationship a bit more two-way. In limited release, with similar error reporting forms to be made available through partner sites — presumably this means that the online mapping services will have error reporting forms? Very good if true. Via All Points Blog.

Why does Tele Atlas “announce” things that they and Navteq have had for years as something new? I really expect more from them than telling people about some old feature that is new, even if they do just change the web page a little bit.

Navteq has allowed people to submit errors and changes to the map for probably 10 years. Here is one of the ways: http://update.navteq.com/df_form.asp?language=en&Submit=Submit
Tele Atlas used to have a similar page.

The question really is what should the map makers do with errors and changes that people submit. If they do not verify them, as GDT used to simply make the change, then you end up with people changing things incorrectly because it is fun.

The difference will come when you can submit an error directly from Google Maps et al.
