New Zealander’s Campaign to Correct Geographic Names
A retired public servant in Wellington, New Zealand is on a campaign to correct spelling mistakes in New Zealand place names, the New Zealand Herald reports. He’s made a total of 60 submissions to the Geographic Board pointing out errors in various toponyms, correcting them so that they reflect the proper spellings of the people’s names they bear. One so-far unsuccessful quest: to change his country’s name to New Zeeland, to reflect the correct spelling of the Dutch province. Also via GeoCarta.

it would also be great, if there was some sort of update concerning the changes of names of countries, whatever, from biblican times up til present. example: constantinoble is known as what? these changes have a way of degrading history.

I sent in a correction to the USGS about a local name. It’s great when they actually make the change because you’re making the world more accurate. :)

What is/are the way(s) to have correct information inserted and incorrect information deleted by map publishers? Do the publishers of printed maps also supply the updates to their multimedia/internet operations? Are there specialized organizations that only supply, Google, MapQuest, Garmin, etc? If so, how, do you get correct information to them? Many thanks for your kind consideration of this inguiry and replying with your expertise.
