Question: GPS Software for India?
Earle writes, “I live in San Francisco and am planning a trip to NW India. At home I use a Garmin GPS sensor attached to a PC laptop with Windows XP operating system. Do you know of map software for India which is compatible with my equipment? If not, do you know another brand of sensor which will work with my laptop and India map software?”

Google Earth Plus with a full cache should work.

Try SatGuide: http://www.satguide.in/, they offer navigation in India, however I am not sure about the coverage and quality. The product is based on Destinator software.

You can use OziExplorer http://www.oziexplorer.com with any map image. You can even scan your own for this purpose. You will have to georeference them unless they come with an accompanying .map file. There are many good sources of international maps that could be used. Here is one that offers 1:250K maps of NW India:
