For location services like Google Latitude to succeed, Tom Arran argues in GPS Business News, their users need to be able to trust them; for that to happen, adequate safeguards need to be in place. He points to four emerging methods: opt-in, adjustable accuracy precision (i.e., being able to say I’m in New York, but not necessarily on which block), a kill switch in case the phone goes missing, and information security.
