India: Olympic Underachiever

If any country can be said to underperform at the Olympics on a regular basis, it's probably India -- a country of a billion people that usually wins a single bronze medal each time. (So far this year they've got a silver medal, in shooting.) Here's an article that explores India's underwhelming Olympic record.

Not only is India incapable of winning an Olympic medal, it seems to be incapable of posting a DFL as well!

What we need to do is stop participating in International events for 5 years, revamp, clean up the administration i.e. throw out the politicians involved with any games. I am ashamed to be an Indian whenever we play any sport. Yes including when we play cricket.

May I know how can we tolerate a man called GILL as the top boss of hockey for years.

There is so much rubbish being talked about fees to be paid to cricketers based on seniority. Why can't we link fees to performance instead. Only then they will realise that chockers do not get fees for free.

As far as other sports are concerned, barring a chess player and a couple of tennis players, its not worth mentioning anyone.

LASTLY WE SHOULD STOP BEING OVERJOYED IF ONE IN A BILLION PEOPLE WINS A BRONZE/SILVER MEDAL OR COMES FOURTH/REACHES FINALS OR IS HAILED BECAUSE HE/SHE COMPLETED A RACE INSPITE OF INJURY. THE BUCK DOES NOT STOP THERE. IN SPORTS AS IN EVERY FIELD PARTCIPATING MATTERS BUT ONE SHOULD WIN SOME ALSO.

BOTTOM LINE - WE ARE THE WORST SPORTING NATION IN THE WORLD. LETS ACCEPT IT.

For a huge majority of the people living in India, winning in the Olympics is not an important part of their life. The most important part of their life is just plain survival. Finding a way to feed themselves is a big part. Yup, we are miserably poor and we let our politicians run our lives. But we'll get there, and when we get there the world will watch! It may take a while but WE WILL GET THERE!!! I HAVE A DREAM THAT ONE DAY .......

I am not an athlete by any means, but my partner who is in his 50s has been running for years. He got me into walking last year and I am not fast but as he says "ANYONE WHO STARTS SHOULD BE ACKNOWLEDGED FOR HAVING THE GUTS TO DO SO, AND IF YOU COMPLETE THE RACE, REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU COME, YOU ARE A WINNER'. I have seen so many Kiwis knock the New Zealand team for not doing better. Hell we are a country of only 4 million people, and we can still do better than a lot of larger countries. It is also usually the couch potatoes who do most of the knocking. That's what annoys me the most.
