The Irish Times on Sonia O'Sullivan
The Irish Times has an essay by Keith Duggan on the last-place finish of Sonia O'Sullivan in Monday's women's 5,000-metre final. Via Eamonn Fitzgerald, who has some extremely nice things to say about DFL.

Surely Sonia shouldn't be given a last placed finish as she made it through the qualifying round. She was indeed last in the final, but not last overall.

I think everyone is missing the point with Sonia O'Sullivan's run in the 5000m final. Since she recorded a perfectly respectable time in the heats (under 15 minutes), she was clearly capable of doing better than 16:20 in the final, but when she saw that she wasn't in with a chance, she decided to bow out of international athletics with a "lap of honour".
